Training Log – Week of May 19th 2025

Monday May 19th, 2025

For whatever reason, I had no DOMS to start this run, and my pace was significantly faster than it has been for a while. When I head east from my house, the view of the mountain is beautiful, but I also run on dirt along or under these high-tension wires the entire way. My turnaround on this run is about a quarter mile up the trail. I don’t know which came first, the park or the high tension wires, but they run for 1.75 miles from my house to that turnaround where the trail ends. There is a paved path most of the way, which most people take, but I much prefer and almost always run the singletrack.

Yes, I am standing in the arroyo to take this picture (illegal or much frowned upon), but it has low sides and has a quick escape. The grass in the park is mown summer high to keep the moisture in, and running on it is slow going. I just hop down into the arroyo, get out, and can quickly get back on the dirt path that continues to head east along the arroyo east of the bridge.

My heart rate variability was a “7” but it felt like last week’s “4”. Thankfully it wasn’t reflected in my pace like it was last week. What my eyes saw when I took this photo was cables going up the mountain that carry tram cars back and forth and electrical transmission cables that carry high voltage electricity and the contrast of the two.

Out and back from my house with the flattest route possible. Only 59′ of elevation gain and offering quite a bit of shade on the way back.

This park is half a mile from my house, and I used it to do the Japanese interval walking method workout – https://www.tomsguide.com/wellness/fitness/i-tried-the-japanese-walking-method-for-a-week-and-im-hooked. About three-quarters of the workout was in the shade under the trees that rim the park.

My goal was to get 20 miles for the week and when I turned around just after this shot and ran home, I achieved my goal for the week. I started at 8:42 which was late and then did the interval running workout 3:00 walking, 3:00 running to the turnaround and then ran most of the way home. It was 81 when I finished!
