Training Log – Week of August 4th, 2025

My training log for the week of August 4th started with a run that was hot but thankfully included the sprinklers at a nearby park. I just couldn’t resist running through them on the way out on my out and back run because I knew that they were soon turning off!

I made a spur-of-the-moment decision to not waste a Monday after a long run and did fartlek on singletrack this morning. To learn more about the benefits of fartlek for runners, go to https://www.runningforalifetime.com/2025/08/04/benefits-of-fartlek-for-runners/

The trail going toward the Vista Sandia Equestrian Park was tempting but it was getting hotter and I was getting low on water. The view is toward the Domingo Baca Dam and Mt. Taylor, obscured by wildfire smoke, to the west.

It is so nice to have a good monsoon season for a change and for everything to be green instead of desert brown!

I ran up to, over, and behind the John Robert Dam (if you watched Breaking Bad it was featured in the series). Although there is no water behind the dam, it has abundant vegetation, great singletrack, and awesome views of the Albuquerque Volcanoes and Mt. Taylor to the west.

I drove to Academy Hills Park to run this morning because of the shade and the fact that it is very close (.98) to a mile loop if you hug the perimeter. I used to meet the Next Step Running Club kids there to do workouts and it brought back great memories.

Yesterday I discovered Electrolit Electrolyte drinks (https://electrolit.com/pages/our-story) at the grocery store. They have been around since 1950 and the one that I got yesterday worked quite well. I tried another one today on my run down in the Rio Grande Valley and along the river, and it worked quite well again!

I wanted to get some more miles this week and the safest way to do that is on dirt. I did have to walk a half mile section of pavement though because I had my Asics trail shoes on.
