My training log for the Week of July 7th 2025 begins a new phase of my training after I have completely eliminated gluten from my diet. It is has been easy because I have fueled my running like every runner (vegan runner) and that meant bread, pasta, and for me, pancakes for lunch almost every day. Ironically, changing to gluten-free pancakes was one of my easiest changes as I substituted oat flour for spelt and whole wheat flour. This morning I did my first gluten-free run, and it was an improvement over most of my runs over the past few months.

Before sunrise run without my usual whole wheat toast with peanut butter, banana, and honey. Instead, I had a dark chocolate Gomacro bar, and it worked just fine!

I was doing an out-and-back that required me crossing a six-lane road, and then this arroyo path to the right caught my eye. Definitely a better choice!

At this very spot at about 7:00 am on January 1st, 2013, my meniscus tore in my right knee. This morning there is a ray of sunshine that brought me joy.

It was 77 degrees at 5:00 am. I know that because I got up to drink beet juice before my run, since its benefits take a while to kick in. I don’t know how much it helped given the starting temperature, but it’s worth it to keep trying to find out.

On Strava, I now record my runs with the title, “Morning Dirt”. Even though I make plans that include roads, I seem to invariably change them now, and go for all dirt!
